I thought my phone was broken. Then I found a browser test.

How a short frequency test in the browser helped make my muffled phone speaker sound clearer again.

It was a normal Tuesday. I had placed my phone on the kitchen counter and poured myself a glass of water. I do not know how it happened. One wrong move, the glass tipped, and the contents ran directly over my phone.

The speaker suddenly sounded underwater

I immediately wiped the device dry, removed the case, and put it in rice. That was the first thing that came to mind. After two hours I took it out and sent a message. The audio came through but sounded muffled. As if someone had draped a cloth over the speaker.

Rice did not help

I googled it. Rice, hair dryer, pressing a rice grain into the charging port. None of those improved the sound. The hair dryer even caused the speaker to stop producing any output for a short time. After half an hour it came back but still sounded muffled.

Then I came across a page that said: Play a low frequency through the speaker. The vibration can move water droplets out of the grille. It sounds odd at first. But the mechanism is simple: Sound moves membranes, membranes can shake small water droplets loose.

A browser tool instead of an app

I did not download an app. Instead I found a website that runs directly in the browser. No download, no phone number, no callback. Just pressed start, carefully raised the volume, and waited.

After the first round I played back a voice message. The sound was still not perfect but noticeably clearer than before.

Why does this work at all?

The speaker membrane vibrates strongly enough at low frequencies to move small water droplets. Those droplets often sit in the grille or directly behind it. When you vibrate them out, the sound can exit freely again.

Important: This is not a repair tool for real liquid damage. If your device got salt water on it, becomes hot, or goes completely silent, a frequency test will not help.

What I do differently now

I no longer place my phone next to drinks. And when something does happen, I now know: Wipe it off first, remove the case, do not charge it. Then run a short browser test and check the sound afterward.
